Arkia Launches New York Route With Expanded Airbus A330 Fleet

Arkia Airlines has expanded its long-haul operations by adding a new Airbus A330-300 aircraft to its fleet. The plane entered commercial service on Tuesday, flying its inaugural route from Tel Aviv to New York, a key expansion market for the airline over the past year.

The eight-year-old A330-300, painted in Arkia's livery, features 245 seats across two classes: 45 in business class and 200 in economy. The significant proportion of business class seats, over 18%, reflects Arkia's strategy to attract premium passengers on its long-distance routes.

This new aircraft is primarily designated for the Tel Aviv-New York route, supporting Arkia's ambition to establish a stronger presence in North America, moving beyond its traditional focus on shorter routes to Europe and the Mediterranean. The A330-300 joins an existing A330-200 in Arkia's fleet, bringing the total number of wide-body aircraft operated by the airline to between three and four, depending on seasonal demand.

While the increased capacity enhances Arkia's long-haul offerings, it also signifies a greater financial commitment. Operating a wide-body aircraft involves higher costs, making consistent high load factors, particularly in the lucrative business class, crucial for profitability. Arkia CEO Oz Berlowitz stated that the new aircraft is a step in the airline's strategic plan to grow its long-haul business, highlighting New York as a flagship route and emphasizing continued investment in the fleet and premium offerings.

The addition of the A330-300 will test the demand for the New York route and Arkia's ability to consistently fill all 245 seats, including the 45 premium business class seats, marking a significant phase in the airline's transformation from a short-haul carrier to a player in the long-distance market.
