Drake Sparks Controversy With New Song Lyrics Referencing Gaza

Canadian rapper Drake has ignited a firestorm in the music world following the leak of a new song snippet. In the clip, Drake appears to call on listeners to 'pray for Gaza.' The lyric has prompted immediate debate among fans regarding its intended meaning. Speculation centers on whether Drake is referring to the Gaza Strip in the Middle East, or if it's a dancehall-style nod to Jamaican artist Vybez Cartel, who refers to Jamaica as 'Gaza City' and his fans as the 'Gaza Nation.' A third possibility is a deliberate combination of both references.

Adding to the complexity, the controversial line is embedded within sexually explicit and crude lyrics, including descriptions of casual sex and drug use. This content is considered particularly jarring given the conservative nature of the Gaza Strip. The song also features lines like 'All over the world we pray for Gaza' and Drake declaring his new nickname, 'Baby Gaza.'

While Drake typically avoids political commentary, he was among the first signatories of an open letter in October 2023 demanding an immediate ceasefire. This letter, signed by numerous artists, urged the U.S. government to call for de-escalation and a ceasefire in Gaza and Israel to prevent further loss of life.

Drake's longtime producer, Noah '40' Shebib, recalled in a 2025 Rolling Stone interview how Drake joined the ceasefire initiative. Shebib stated that a friend approached him about signing the letter, and upon Drake's agreement, he discussed it with the rapper and his team, describing the process as very simple. Shebib also expressed his deep distress at the time over images and videos from Gaza, which he said 'collapsed his world in many ways.'
