US Ambassador to Israel: America's Support for Israel Serves U.S. Interests
U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman stated in a special interview that America has never defended Israel, emphasizing that U.S. actions, such as confronting Iran, are primarily driven by American interests, not solely to protect Israel. He described the relationship as one of partnership, beneficial to both nations.
Friedman also addressed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, criticizing the international media's portrayal of events in the West Bank, arguing that labeling all incidents as extreme settler violence is inaccurate and unfair. He distinguished between responsible settlers and what he termed 'unsettlers' who engage in aggressive behavior, noting that the vast majority of settlers are law-abiding citizens. He also highlighted the presence and integration of Arab citizens within Israeli society, citing examples of Arabs in prominent positions in government, healthcare, and the judiciary, to counter claims of apartheid.
Regarding U.S. policy under President Trump, Friedman asserted that Trump acted independently in confronting Iran, not under Israeli pressure. He also discussed the ongoing efforts to finalize a new security memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Israel, set to take effect in 2028. He expressed optimism about potential normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia, drawing parallels to the positive outcomes seen in the UAE following the Abraham Accords.
On the issue of Gaza, Friedman opposed forced displacement but supported the right of Gazans to leave if they wished, echoing sentiments from both Netanyahu and Trump. He also noted Hamas's failure to disarm since the October 2025 ceasefire, while simultaneously pointing to the significant daily humanitarian aid entering Gaza as evidence against claims of genocide by Israel.
Friedman concluded by emphasizing the strong and enduring personal relationship between President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu, and reiterated that U.S.-Israel relations are built on shared interests that transcend electoral cycles in either country.
