Ultra-Orthodox Community Faces Disillusionment with Right-Wing Government
The ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) community in Israel is experiencing a significant shift from election euphoria to widespread disillusionment, a stark contrast to the vibrant political engagement typically seen during election periods. This sentiment is fueled by perceived failures of Haredi political parties to protect young men from military conscription and address other key community interests.
Internal party conflicts and leadership challenges are rampant. Aryeh Deri, a prominent Haredi politician, faces public criticism and has been involved in public disputes with prominent rabbis. Similarly, within the United Torah Judaism party, veteran leaders Moshe Gafni and Uri Maklev were ousted, reflecting deep divisions and dissatisfaction with the current political strategy and its outcomes.
New, anti-establishment parties have emerged within the Haredi sector, capitalizing on the discontent. These parties, such as "The Haredi Public" led by Motie Leitner and "Color Black" advocating for draft dodgers, are actively campaigning against the established Haredi parties. This fragmentation highlights a growing desire for alternative political representation that better addresses the community's evolving concerns.
The core issues driving this discontent include the ongoing struggle over military conscription for Haredi men, the freezing of budgets for yeshivas, and perceived governmental inaction on issues critical to the community. The once-strong alliance between the right-wing bloc and Haredi parties, which reached its peak with the formation of the current government in December 2022, is now showing significant strain.
This disillusionment marks a departure from the optimism following the 2022 elections, where the formation of a full right-wing government was seen as a major victory for the Haredi community. The current atmosphere is characterized by internal recriminations, a sense of political failure, and a questioning of the established Haredi leadership's effectiveness in navigating the complex relationship with the state.
