Southern Command Chief Addresses Gaza Film Controversy

Major General Yaron Finkelman, commander of the IDF's Southern Command, addressed recent controversies surrounding the Gaza film "Naza" and accusations against the Israeli military during a ceremony marking the start of the Hebrew year in the Eshkol Regional Council. He stated, "Against false claims, we will present facts. To difficult questions, we will answer honestly. And when a failure is discovered among us, we will investigate, learn, and correct."

Finkelman reflected on the October 7th Hamas attacks, describing it as a "terrible morning" that shattered trust and personal security. He emphasized the IDF's resilience, stating, "We rose from the wreckage, gathered them, recovered, fought as one man with one destiny and purpose." He acknowledged the war's heavy price, asserting the necessity of faith in the righteousness of their cause, portraying the IDF as a force for good against evil.

Addressing Hamas, Finkelman noted its embedded nature within the Gazan population, stating, "Hamas is not an 'alien' in Gaza; it grew out of it, was raised and educated within a radical and murderous Islamic culture." He contrasted the IDF's efforts to minimize civilian harm with Hamas's alleged cynical use of civilians as human shields.

Regarding the "Naza" film controversy, Finkelman defended Israel's right to self-defense against a terror organization. He stressed the IDF's commitment to maintaining its ethical standards, distinguishing between combatants and non-combatants, while acknowledging the need for self-examination and correction when failures occur. He also addressed international efforts to damage Israel's reputation, quoting Alterman: "They will not succeed!"

Finkelman detailed current IDF operations in Gaza, including establishing a new defense line within the Strip to neutralize threats and prevent Hamas's resurgence. He highlighted strikes against the tunnel network, weaponry, and production infrastructure. He concluded by urging his commanders to lead with courage and dedication, assuring them of the public's support, and promising the residents of the western Negev that the IDF is committed to ensuring their security and enabling them to live and thrive.
