IDF Southern Command Chief Vows to Counter False Narratives with Facts

Major General Yaron Finkelman, commander of the IDF's Southern Command, delivered remarks at a ceremony in the Eshkol Regional Council marking the new Hebrew year. He addressed the challenges facing the IDF and Israel militarily, publicly, and internationally, particularly in light of recent controversies surrounding the film "Nezar." Finkelman emphasized a message of confidence in the righteousness of their path, coupled with a commitment to self-examination, transparency, and learning from mistakes when failures are identified.

Finkelman stated that the current conflict extends beyond the battlefield into the realm of public perception and the struggle for Israel's image abroad. He characterized the fighting as a broad battle between light and darkness, good and evil, stressing that even when serious accusations arise against the IDF, the response must be through presenting facts and objective investigation. "Against false claims, we will present facts; to difficult questions, we will answer honestly; and when a failure is discovered, we will investigate, learn, and correct," he declared.

He further explained that belief in their cause does not absolve the military from self-scrutiny but rather imposes a responsibility to examine its actions, confront criticism, and learn lessons. Finkelman noted that alongside the fighting on the ground, certain elements aim to undermine Israel's international standing and public trust. He asserted that Israel's strength and the IDF's power attract attempts by various actors to damage the country's reputation, sow doubt within Israeli society, and erode internal unity.

"Our strength is great, and our spirit is firm," Finkelman said, adding that those seeking to tarnish Israel's name are working, among other things, to undermine the sense of justice, harm cohesion, and weaken internal trust during a sensitive and complex period. His speech conveyed a dual message: a firm stance against criticism he deems based on falsehoods or distortions, and a commitment to ongoing self-examination, answering tough questions, and rectifying shortcomings.

The speech, delivered in Eshkol, an area heavily impacted during the war, carried special significance due to its location. Finkelman chose to open the new year with a message emphasizing resilience, faith in their path, and continued fighting, while positioning responsibility, fact-finding, and lesson-learning as integral components of the army's strength.
