Public Figures Sue Over Online Defamation and Fake News

Seven new defamation lawsuits have been filed against distributors of fake news online, as part of a legal effort to "cleanse the network." The initiative, spearheaded by the "Defamation Control Center" (Hamal Hadeva), now includes prominent public figures and journalists such as Lucy Aharish, Ronen Tzur, and Barak Siri. The center reported a significant 40% decrease in the use of the word "traitor" on social media recently, attributing this to their ongoing public struggle against fake news and incitement.

The lawsuits aim to combat racism and orchestrated campaigns of disinformation. Journalist Lucy Aharish filed several suits against individuals who allegedly ran a coordinated campaign against her, using her ethnic background to label her a "terrorist" and "destroyer of Israel," and inciting violence against her and her family. The center emphasized zero tolerance for racism in this action.

Further legal actions include a suit by Dr. Ronen Bergman against activist Amalia Azer, who allegedly fabricated serious accusations against the journalist, including claims of endangering state security and spreading false information related to the October 7th events. The center stated that such actions constitute harassment of bereaved families and are entirely false.

Ronen Tzur has also filed a lawsuit against a social media activist who compared him to Adolf Hitler, while Barak Siri has joined the fight against defamation. The Defamation Control Center reiterated its mission to restore truth and sanity to Israeli public discourse, vowing to continue pursuing legal action against those who spread harmful content online until they are held fully accountable.
