Ashdod Man Fined Over NIS 32,000 for Repeatedly Arsoning Trash Bins

The Ashdod Municipality has successfully identified and charged an individual responsible for a series of deliberate arson attacks on public waste receptacles, resulting in a fine of over 32,000 shekels (approximately $8,700 USD).

The incidents began in early July when two underground waste bins on Rehov Rashbi 40 were completely destroyed by fire, causing an estimated damage of over 20,000 shekels. The municipality promptly installed a replacement bin, but it too was set ablaze the following day.

Subsequent inspections revealed the new bin was repeatedly targeted, causing significant damage and disrupting the daily lives of residents in the neighborhood. Municipal inspector Nadav Abutbul initiated an investigation, systematically gathering evidence and monitoring the site until the arsonist was identified.

Following the collection of sufficient evidence, the suspect received a demand for payment from the municipality's legal department. This demand included the cost of the direct damage, along with enforcement and legal preparation expenses. As a gesture of goodwill, the enforcement costs were reduced, leaving the individual liable for the full cost of repairing and replacing the damaged facilities.
