Lior Elmaliach Releases 'Hoshanah Rabbah' Prayer for Hostages

International cantor Lior Elmaliach has released a new single titled 'Hoshanah Rabbah,' a deeply emotional prayer inspired by the return of hostage Rani, who was killed in captivity. The song, written by David Monsonego and composed by Chen Harari, was released in the lead-up to the High Holy Days and close to the three-year mark since the October 7th attacks. Monsonego described the text as more than a song, calling it a prayer, plea, and cry of faith, born from the reality of the hostages clinging to their faith.

'Hoshanah Rabbah' is part of the album 'Shirat David,' a project where David Monsonego collaborates with various Israeli artists. Elmaliach, known for his work in preserving and promoting Jewish piyyut (liturgical poetry), was chosen for his ability to imbue the lyrics with spiritual power and faith. Monsonego stated that Elmaliach's performance brings a unique added value to the words, leaving listeners deeply moved.

This is Monsonego's second song written in response to the October 7th events, following 'A Child's Dream,' which featured families displaced from the Gaza envelope. While 'A Child's Dream' focused on those forced to leave their homes, 'Hoshanah Rabbah' shifts perspective to the hostages and the faith that sustained them. The release during the month of Elul, a time of repentance and introspection, and near the anniversary of the massacre, adds significant weight to the song's message.

The single joins a wave of new musical works released recently for the High Holy Days, with many singers launching new songs. 'Hoshanah Rabbah' serves as a moment of remembrance, prayer, and hope, reflecting on those lost, those who fought for their lives, and the enduring human capacity to hold onto faith even in the darkest times.
