World Cup group picture sharpens as Mexico advances and Canada routs Qatar

The standings in World Cup 2026 Groups A and B are becoming clearer, with one round left to determine who reaches the round of 32 and from which place. According to Sport 5, Mexico has already secured advancement, while two more teams are close to booking their spots.

In Group A, Mexico defeated South Korea 1-0 and clinched a place in the round of 32 with a perfect record, two wins and six points. Its final group match will be against Czechia, a game that is crucial for the Czech side. If Czechia wins, it will also advance, while South Korea can reach the round of 32 with a draw against South Africa.

The current standings also mean Mexico would face Spain if the group ended now, because Spain is temporarily third in Group H. However, the report notes Spain is unlikely to stay there, and Mexico could instead meet Uruguay or Saudi Arabia in the knockout stage.

In Group B, Canada crushed Qatar 6-0 and moved, at least for now, into first place ahead of Switzerland, which beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 but has a worse goal difference. Canada and Switzerland are now almost certain to advance with four points each. They will meet in the next round for first place, while Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar will battle for third. At present, Canada would cross over with Belgium, third in Group G, while Switzerland could draw South Korea, currently second in Group A.
