Annual Rabbi Ovadia Yosef Memorial Event Canceled Amid Legal Battles
The central memorial event for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, scheduled to take place at the International Convention Center in Jerusalem, has been definitively canceled. The decision follows directives from the Attorney General and the prolonged legal proceedings in the Supreme Court.
The legal saga centered on allegations that the event, organized by the Shas party, constituted election propaganda. Shas representatives argued that this was selective enforcement, pointing to other memorial events, such as one for Yitzhak Rabin, which were permitted.
As the Supreme Court delayed its ruling, the timeline for organizing a large-scale event, intended to span three days and accommodate tens of thousands of attendees, expired. The complex logistical, financial, and venue arrangements could not proceed without immediate legal approval.
Consequently, the producer informed officials that the event could not proceed without a green light, leading the Ministry of Religious Services to accept the reality of the cancellation. The Ministry stated that if an alternative event is decided upon, discussions would be held with the Jerusalem Municipality. The Ministry thanked the Mayor, Moshe Lion, and the CEO for their efforts.
