Jerusalem Cancels Memorial Event for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef Amid Election Concerns

The Ministry of Religious Services informed the Jerusalem Municipality on Monday afternoon that a memorial event for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, scheduled to take place at Binyanei Ha'uma from October 6-8, has been canceled. The cancellation stems from directives by the Attorney General, citing the proximity to the Knesset elections and an ongoing High Court of Justice proceeding.

In a letter addressed to the Director-General of the Jerusalem Municipality and a senior official in the Ministry of Religious Services' department for religious events, the Ministry's Director-General, Yehuda Avidan, stated that the decision was made following notification from the event's producer and "in light of the Attorney General's directive that at this stage the event in memory of Maran cannot be held due to the election system."

Avidan further explained that the "continuation of the legal proceedings in the High Court of Justice" also contributed to the decision. "To my great regret and due to the lack of any other possibility, I hereby inform you of the cancellation of Maran's commemoration, which was supposed to take place between October 6-8 at Binyanei Ha'uma," he wrote.

However, the Ministry of Religious Services has not ruled out the possibility of holding an alternative event. Avidan indicated that if a replacement event is decided upon, discussions would be held between the Ministry and the Municipality.
