Rabbi Ovadia Yosef Memorial Event Canceled Due to Election Campaign

The annual memorial event for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, scheduled to take place at the Binyanei Ha'uma convention center in Jerusalem from October 6 to 8, has been officially canceled. The decision was made following guidance from the Attorney General, who advised that holding the event during the ongoing election campaign would be inappropriate.

Yehuda Avidan, Director General of the Ministry of Religious Services, informed the Jerusalem Municipality and other relevant parties of the cancellation. In a letter, Avidan cited the tight schedule and ongoing legal proceedings in the Supreme Court (Bagatz) as further reasons why the event could not proceed as planned.

The event's producer had previously indicated that logistical constraints, combined with the Attorney General's directive, made it impossible to hold the commemoration. Avidan's letter confirmed this, stating that the producer could not execute the event due to the existing timeline and the Attorney General's guidance regarding the election period.

Despite the cancellation, the Ministry of Religious Services has not entirely ruled out the possibility of organizing an alternative event at a later date. Avidan indicated that discussions would be held with the Jerusalem Municipality if a decision is made to pursue a replacement commemoration.
