Tel Aviv Opens New Underground Power Substation to Boost City's Electricity Supply
A new underground electrical substation, named "Tel Aviv University," has been put into operation in northern Tel Aviv by the Israel Electric Corporation. The project, reportedly costing 217 million shekels, is situated approximately 20 meters below ground and features two 75 MW power transformers. Construction took about four years and was carried out amidst dense urban development.
The substation is expected to enhance the reliability of electricity supply for residential areas, businesses, and institutions, including Tel Aviv University. It is also designed to accommodate the anticipated increase in electricity consumption due to future development in the Sde Dov area.
This is not the first underground substation in Israel. A similar facility in Givatayim, inaugurated in June 2025, is located 18 meters deep, spans seven levels, and also houses two 75 MW transformers.
