Arab-Israeli Blogger Clashes With Y Combinator Founder Over Aid Group Allegations
An online dispute erupted between Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham and Arab-Israeli blogger Nuseir Yassin concerning allegations against the medical aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The controversy stems from a report in The Telegraph detailing demands by UK Lawyers for Israel for an investigation into alleged ties between MSF staff and Palestinian terror groups. The organization has called on the UK Home Secretary to consider banning MSF under anti-terrorism laws.
The report cited specific cases, including Fadi Jihad Mohammed Al-Wadia, a physiotherapist with MSF killed in Gaza in June 2024, whom the Islamic Jihad described as a "martyr commander" and head of its military production unit. Another case mentioned was Nasser Hamdi Abd Al-Latif Al-Shalafouh, an MSF driver allegedly identified by Israel as a Hamas sniper.
UK Lawyers for Israel argued these cases raise questions about MSF's vetting processes and safeguards against the misuse of donations by individuals linked to proscribed organizations. Paul Graham defended MSF, calling it one of the world's most respected non-profits and suggesting that attacking it indicated malice.
Nuseir Yassin responded sharply to Graham, asserting that Graham's activism for Palestinians had inadvertently empowered extremists and harmed the Palestinian cause. Yassin accused Graham of fostering a belief among extremists that terrorism garners international sympathy and criticized Graham's approach as "soft racism of low expectations," implying he expected little from Palestinians and viewed them solely as victims.
Yassin further contended that Palestinian extremism has negatively impacted Palestinians seeking peaceful coexistence with Israel, hindering their aspirations for stable lives and education. He concluded by sarcastically thanking Graham and urging the "liberation of Palestine from simplistic Westerners."
