Accused of Threatening Mother, Man Dies in Prison

An Israeli man accused of severely assaulting and threatening to kill his 80-year-old mother died in prison shortly after his arrest and indictment. Shimon Weisfeld, 53, from Motzkin, was arrested last Sunday by police on charges of severe assault causing actual bodily harm and threats against his mother, Polina. According to the indictment filed Friday, Weisfeld repeatedly attacked his mother while living with her, causing her significant injuries and frequently threatening her life, saying, "I will kill you." His mother lived in fear of him.

On Friday, the Haifa Magistrate's Court ordered Weisfeld's detention until further notice, despite his complaints about his health. At the request of his attorney, Lior Bar Zohar, and with the agreement of the police prosecutor, Adv. Kobi Cohen, the court ordered a psychiatric evaluation for Weisfeld. However, before the Jewish New Year holiday began, Weisfeld, who was held at Tzalmon Prison, died.

The Israel Prison Service confirmed his death and stated that a team has been appointed to investigate the circumstances. The Prison Service said that Weisfeld had complained about his health condition. The indictment detailed his cruel attacks on his mother.
