Burglar Returns Stolen Goods, Leaves Apology Note

Police in Kfar Kana, northern Israel, have indicted a 34-year-old man, Amir Hayajneh, for breaking into a home in the Emek region in May. The homeowner reported that the burglar entered through a shower window and stole jewelry and a Sony PlayStation console worth tens of thousands of shekels.

Two weeks after the initial burglary, the homeowner was surprised to find a significant portion of the stolen items returned, including gold jewelry, the console, and a photo of the homeowner's son. The indictment states that Hayajneh returned to the scene to give back the items and left a note saying, "Don't tell anyone I broke in."

Despite the return of the goods, the investigation continued. On July 18, another burglary was reported in the same area, also through a shower window, using a knife. This time, jewelry worth tens of thousands of shekels and cash were stolen. The burglar left the knife behind, and forensic evidence led police to Hayajneh.

Hayajneh initially denied the charges but later confessed. "This is one of the rare cases where I've encountered a burglar who returned to the scene of the crime to return what he stole," said Chief Inspector Tatiana Shmidov, head of investigations and intelligence at the Kfar Kana police. The case will be heard at the Nazareth Magistrate's Court.

Hayajneh's public defender, Wassim Daher, stated that his client expressed sincere remorse and acted to return the stolen property, adding that Hayajneh faces complex issues and that rehabilitation should be prioritized over punishment.
