Hapoel Jerusalem Player Galin Smith Hopes for Stability

Galin Smith, a new and intriguing player for Hapoel Jerusalem, expressed his desire for stability in his career, signing a two-year contract with the Israeli basketball club. Smith, who is also a naturalized player for the Croatian national team, hopes to help Hapoel Jerusalem achieve success in the EuroCup and potentially reach the EuroLeague.

In an interview with Basketballsphere, Smith discussed his nomadic career, having played in five different countries. He humorously noted that his PlayStation 5 is always the first item unpacked from his luggage. Reflecting on his time in Germany, he mentioned learning to be more sociable and enjoy the present moment, acknowledging the uncertainty of future locations.

When asked about singing national anthems, Smith spoke about the sacrifices made for national independence. He also touched upon his role in trying to restore the reputation of Croatian basketball, describing it as hard and demanding work. Despite not being drafted and starting in Germany's second division, Smith admitted to still comparing himself to peers as a motivational tool, noting that many promising young players falter in their professional careers.

Smith revealed that the first significant act he performed with his earnings was helping his wife complete her master's degree. He signed with Hapoel Jerusalem for two years, his longest commitment since playing in Berlin, seeking stability for himself and his family. However, he acknowledged the precarious nature of professional sports contracts, stating, "I have a two-year contract, but they can cut me in the middle of the season. Nevertheless, I hope for two good years."

Outside of basketball, Smith's greatest fear is feeling helpless.
