Hesder Yeshivas See Enrollment Surge Amidst War

Hesder yeshivas, which combine religious studies with mandatory military service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), have reported a significant increase in student enrollment. According to the Union of Hesder Yeshivas, 2,987 students began their studies in the 5787 academic year (Jewish calendar), marking a roughly 7% rise from the previous year. This growth trend has been consistent for several consecutive years, with new student numbers up approximately 13% compared to the three-year average. The increase is evident in both traditional programs that blend Torah study with military service and in programs designed for Jewish students from abroad. Uri Pinsky, Director-General of the Union of Hesder Yeshivas, attributed this trend partly to the ongoing "Swords of Iron" war and the prominent role Hesder students and alumni have played in both active duty and reserve service. He stated that the high participation rate in combat units has boosted young people's interest in combining extensive religious education with meaningful military service. Pinsky also noted that many institutions are facing space shortages due to the influx of new students.
