Syria Seeks Return to 1974 Disengagement Accord with Israel

Syria's new transitional government is advocating for a diplomatic resolution to its conflict with Israel, specifically calling for a return to the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement concerning the Golan Heights. Syrian Foreign Minister Assaad al-Sheibani stated that Damascus prefers to "settle the conflict with Israel diplomatically," emphasizing the high cost of war and the desire to prevent any pretexts for aggression. He stressed that Syria's stance on Israeli actions has not changed and is rooted in adherence to the 1974 agreement.

Al-Sheibani also demanded concrete steps from Israel, urging Israeli forces to withdraw from the occupied demilitarized zone in southern Syria and retreat to the demarcation line that existed before December 8, 2024, the date of the regime change in Damascus. The Syrian Foreign Ministry's head reiterated that the new leadership prioritizes a diplomatic path while simultaneously requiring Israel to pull back to pre-regime change positions.

During a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who was on an official visit to Damascus, al-Sheibani expressed gratitude for Turkey's support. He specifically acknowledged Ankara's principled stance against Israeli attacks and its backing of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
