Syria Seeks to Renew Security Talks with Israel to End IDF Presence

Syria is anticipating a near-term resumption of negotiations with Israel aimed at a security agreement that would lead to the withdrawal of Israeli Defense Forces from Syrian territory, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad told Reuters in Damascus. Mekdad said that earlier this year, the two sides were close to an agreement after nearly reaching consensus on a framework involving UN-monitored security zones and buffer areas, but Israel has since avoided implementing the deal.

He added that the United States is continuously pressuring Israel to return to dialogue, and despite recent tensions following an Israeli airstrike on a Syrian airbase last week, Mekdad believes talks will resume. Mekdad emphasized that Damascus prioritizes halting Israeli strikes and building mutual trust, urging Israel to seize the "historic opportunity" presented by the open diplomatic channel.

The Syrian foreign minister also stated that Syria respects Israel's security concerns but demands reciprocal respect, particularly regarding Syrian airspace and IDF operations in southern Syria. He acknowledged Turkey's support in rebuilding the Syrian military and affirmed that Syria does not intend to relinquish this alliance. Israeli Prime Minister's Office and the U.S. State Department declined to comment on the statements.
