Syria Vows to Continue Military Buildup After Security Talks with Israel Stall
Syrian officials close to President Bashar al-Assad announced that despite ongoing contacts with Israel aimed at reaching a future security agreement, Israel withdrew from the negotiations for unknown reasons. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad stated that he maintained long-term communication with Israel to reduce tensions, but accused Israel of backing out at the last moment. Mekdad emphasized that Syria has not closed the door on a security deal but expressed skepticism about Israel's intentions, noting the withdrawal from previously agreed terms.
The Syrian government declared its sovereign right to continue strengthening its military and security institutions, affirming no intention to halt this process. This announcement follows recent tensions on the northern front and reports that Syria received regional advice to present a false agreement to Israel while preparing for conflict. Additionally, Syria recently claimed possession of nuclear material for energy purposes, asserting its right to do so.
These developments highlight ongoing instability and mistrust between Syria and Israel, with Damascus signaling a firm stance on military enhancement amid stalled diplomatic efforts.
