Fire Erupts in Northern Israel Nature Reserve, Tourists Evacuated
A fire broke out in the Tel Dan Nature Reserve in the Finger of the Galilee region on the last day of the holiday, prompting the evacuation of all visitors. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority is working to extinguish the blaze and has requested assistance from the fire department.
The Tel Dan Nature Reserve, despite its small size of 481 dunams (approximately 120 acres), is a unique habitat due to its location between Mount Hermon, the Golan Heights, and the Hula Valley, supporting a diverse range of plant and animal species. The reserve is known for its year-round flowing Dan River, one of the three sources of the Jordan River, which has a significant water flow and consistently cool, high-quality water.
The popular tourist trail within the reserve features wooden bridges, the river, an ancient biblical-era mound with remnants of a massive rampart and a Canaanite gate from the Bronze Age, and an abandoned flour mill. The reserve offers a shaded and pleasant experience, even during hot summer days.
