Israel Poised to Become Global Space Power, Says IAI Chief
Boaz Levy, Chairman of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), outlined a vision for the future battlefield, emphasizing increased reliance on satellites, artificial intelligence, robotics, and missiles, with blurred lines between front lines and the home front. He warned that future urban conflicts will necessitate seamless integration of all systems.
Levy highlighted IAI's significant role in space, stating Israel has already "conquered space" through its satellite capabilities, which originated in the late 1970s to bridge a significant intelligence gap after the peace treaty with Egypt and withdrawal from Sinai. At that time, only the US and Soviet Union possessed similar technologies.
He pointed to the Ofeq satellite series as a prime example of Israel's space prowess. During a recent conflict, these satellites provided crucial intelligence for precise strikes and advanced operational planning. Levy noted that Israel launched three satellites within a single year during the war: the Dror communication satellite and two Ofeq observation satellites, demonstrating its capacity as a major power. The growing number of observation satellites generates vast amounts of data, forming the foundation for AI systems.
IAI is pursuing a plan to deploy a larger constellation of smaller satellites for continuous monitoring of areas of interest, from Iran to Turkey. This initiative, approved by the government and funded by IAI's R&D budget and the Ministry of Defense, aims to provide operational users with high-frequency, high-resolution observation capabilities. Levy believes Israel is on track to become one of the top three space powers globally.
Looking ahead, Levy described future warfare as less about soldiers and more about robots, advanced sensing, and massive data repositories. AI algorithms will analyze this data to predict future events based on historical patterns. IAI is building these data repositories and dedicated teams to integrate AI into operational systems. He stressed that future wars will occur within cities, requiring integrated responses from military, security, rescue, and medical forces operating on a shared information network.
Levy acknowledged that Israel entered the drone threat response somewhat late due to budget constraints and shifting priorities. While IAI is confident in its drone detection capabilities, he emphasized the need for a multi-layered interception approach combining kinetic, electronic, and laser countermeasures to handle large swarms. He also addressed the debate on an independent missile corps, stating the critical need is for missiles that provide tactical advantages, regardless of which branch operates them.
Levy concluded by envisioning a future battlefield akin to playing chess on multiple boards simultaneously, with Israel facing complex threats from various directions. This requires interconnected systems for sensors, munitions, and autonomous control, all sharing data to select optimal responses in real-time. He assured that the technology is not science fiction but rather a matter of integrating existing computational tools.
