Israel Aerospace Industries Chief Admits Lag in Drone Defense Development
Boaz Levy, Chairman of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and head of the Arrow missile project, discussed the future of warfare in a podcast interview, emphasizing the critical roles of artificial intelligence (AI), satellites, and robotics. Levy highlighted IAI's significant advancements in space technology, dating back to the late 1970s, which were initiated to compensate for intelligence gaps following the withdrawal from Sinai. He stated that Israel is a "space power," with its "Ofek" satellite series providing crucial real-time intelligence for military operations, enabling precise strikes and mission planning.
Levy revealed plans for a constellation of smaller satellites to ensure continuous surveillance of key areas, a program already approved by the government and partially funded by IAI's R&D budget and the Ministry of Defense. He aims for Israel to be among the top three global space powers. The next era of warfare, according to Levy, will involve fewer soldiers and more autonomous systems, robots, advanced sensors, and AI-driven data analysis. He stressed the need for integrated information systems, where emergency services, rescue helicopters, and military units share a common operational picture.
Addressing the threat of drones, Levy acknowledged that Israel "started looking for a solution too late," partly due to budget constraints and shifting priorities. While Israel has mastered drone detection, Levy stated that effective interception requires a multi-layered approach combining kinetic, electronic, and laser countermeasures, especially against drone swarms. He noted that the Ministry of Defense's Directorate of Defense Research and Development is working on a comprehensive national solution.
Regarding the debate on dedicated missile forces, Levy downplayed the organizational structure, asserting that the need for advanced missile capabilities to achieve strategic advantages is paramount. He envisions future battlefields as integrated systems where satellites, sensors, weapons, autonomous platforms, and command systems seamlessly exchange data to determine optimal responses to threats.
