Israeli Guard Omer Mayer Projected as Potential NBA Draft Pick

Israeli basketball player Omer Mayer, 19, is generating significant buzz in the United States for his potential NBA prospects. A new scouting report by Arsene Demirk, highlighted by "Double Dribble" podcast, identifies Mayer as a strong candidate for a breakout season with Purdue University. Demirk described Mayer as one of the "craftiest creators" he has seen in recent years and believes he has "clear potential to be an NBA starting player."

Mayer, who averaged 5.5 points per game last season, is expected to take on a larger role in Purdue's offense. His experience with Israeli national youth teams is seen as a factor that could make him one of the best guards in the Big Ten conference. The report specifically praised his court vision, pace control, footwork, and ability to create opportunities for himself and teammates, noting his smooth ball-handling, size, and talent.

However, the report also pointed out areas for improvement, including difficulty consistently driving to the basket and an over-reliance on jump shots. Despite these critiques, Demirk remains optimistic, calling Mayer "the real deal" and projecting him as a potential top-20 pick in the 2028 NBA Draft if his development continues. He might even consider the 2027 draft if he has a standout season.

Mayer has also drawn comparisons to former NBA player Gal Mekel, with Demirk calling him the best Israeli guard he has seen since Mekel. NBA Draft Room also lists Mayer as a draft prospect, anticipating he could be selected between the late first and second rounds in 2027 or 2028. They described him as a "talented shooter, scorer, and passer" but also noted concerns about his athleticism and first step.
