Iran May Escalate Regional Tensions Ahead of US Midterms

Iran may be seeking to exploit the eight weeks leading up to the U.S. midterm elections as an opportunity for regional escalation, potentially including a broad, multi-front conflict, according to Israeli defense assessments. Tehran is reportedly under significant economic pressure and facing diminished leverage, prompting concerns that it might attempt to improve its negotiating position for a future deal by increasing regional tensions.

This period is considered particularly sensitive for Israel due to ongoing developments and the upcoming holiday season. Iran's actions are seen as a response to its internal crises and a potential strategy to exert pressure on the U.S. as the elections approach. The rising cost of fuel in the U.S., with diesel reaching a record $6.06 per gallon and gasoline at $4.28, is adding political pressure on the American administration.

Recent weeks have seen a noticeable increase in the boldness and frequency of Iranian-backed attacks. One indicator is the significant escalation in Yemen, the most severe since 2022, with Houthi forces nearing the Bab al-Mandab strait. While the Houthis are carrying out these actions, Iran is believed to be directing and supporting them, potentially in exchange for financial aid and weaponry.

Pakistan has reportedly conveyed a warning from Saudi Arabia to Iran, urging it to restrain Houthi attacks on the Kingdom. The message suggests that continued attacks could escalate the conflict into a wider regional security crisis. Pakistan's Defense Minister, Khawaja Asif, has warned that attacks on Saudi territory could trigger a defense pact between Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, potentially drawing these nations into the conflict.

In response to these regional developments, Israel is preparing for a potential escalation. Messages have been conveyed to both Iran and Hezbollah, urging them not to escalate tensions, particularly following recent Israeli military operations in Lebanon, including the destruction of over two kilometers of tunnels under the Ali Taher ridge. These tunnels reportedly contained numerous Iranian-made rockets, missiles, drones, anti-tank missiles, mines, and explosives, requiring over 1,100 tons of explosives for their destruction.

Hezbollah, reportedly concerned by Israeli actions, has approached Iran for assistance and involvement. Israeli defense officials believe Hezbollah is attempting to rebuild its damaged Shiite axis. As the U.S. midterms approach, multiple friction points are accumulating in the region, and Israel fears that Iranian pressure could translate into a broader escalation in the near future.
