Iran May Escalate Regional Tensions Ahead of US Midterm Elections

Iran may be seeking to exploit the eight weeks leading up to the US midterm elections as an opportunity for regional escalation, potentially including a broad, multi-front conflict, according to Israeli assessments. Tehran is reportedly under significant economic pressure and facing diminished leverage, while also recognizing that increased political and economic pressure on the Trump administration ahead of the elections could narrow its options for confronting Iran.

Israel is entering a highly sensitive period, coinciding with regional developments and upcoming holidays. Iran, seemingly cornered by its economic crisis and the loss of the Strait of Hormuz as a significant pressure point, may see escalation as a way to improve its position for future negotiations. The rising cost of fuel in the US, with diesel reaching a record $6.06 per gallon and gasoline $4.28, is adding to the political pressure on the American administration.

Recent weeks have seen an increase in the boldness and frequency of Iranian-backed attacks. One indicator of this trend is the significant escalation in Yemen, the most severe since 2020, with Houthi forces nearing the Bab al-Mandab strait. While the Houthis are carrying out these actions, Iran is believed to be directing them, potentially in exchange for financial aid and weaponry, as evidenced by Iranian sources admitting to pushing the Houthis to escalate against Saudi Arabia.

This escalation in Yemen has raised concerns about a wider conflict. Pakistan has reportedly conveyed a warning from Saudi Arabia to Iran, urging it to restrain Houthi attacks, and indicating that continued aggression could transform the conflict into a broader regional security crisis. Pakistan's Defense Minister, Khawaja Asif, has also warned that attacks on Saudi territory could trigger a mutual defense pact involving Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia.

In response to these regional developments, Israel is preparing for a potential expansion of the conflict. Israel has conveyed messages to both Iran and Hezbollah, urging them not to escalate tensions, particularly following the recent Israeli military operation that destroyed over two kilometers of tunnels beneath the Ali Taher ridge. These tunnels contained numerous Iranian-made rockets, missiles, drones, anti-tank missiles, mines, and explosives, requiring over 1,100 tons of explosives for their destruction.

Following the tunnel destruction, the IDF is on high alert, prepared for various scenarios, including a multi-front conflict. Hezbollah, reportedly concerned by Israel's actions, has approached Iran for assistance and involvement, seeking to rebuild its damaged Shiite axis. Israel's defense establishment believes Iran may intervene if its activities continue to be targeted by Israel, raising fears that Iranian pressure could translate into wider escalation in the region as the US midterm elections approach.
