Israeli Defense Firms Find New European Foothold in Poland

Following French President Emmanuel Macron's efforts to restrict Israeli defense companies' activities, many have shifted their focus to Poland, showcasing their products at a major exhibition. Twenty-one Israeli defense firms are currently exhibiting at the MSPO exhibition in Poland, which opened this week. Among the participants are major players like Rafael and Israel Aerospace Industries, alongside significant international market companies such as Aeronautics and Orbit, and smaller firms like D-Fend and Roboteam.

The exhibition highlights the diverse range of products offered by these companies. Rafael is a global leader in air defense and tactical missiles, known for its Spike series. Aeronautics produces various unmanned aerial vehicles, including the Dominator MALE drone with a 20-hour flight duration. Centrx, a company specializing in anti-drone technology, which was acquired by Shaundes, secured a contract to provide security for the upcoming World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Poland is positioning itself as a key European player with a projected defense budget of approximately 200 billion zloty (about $53.8 billion) by 2026, attracting around 1,000 companies globally to the MSPO exhibition. This includes international giants like Lockheed Martin and competitors from France and Turkey.

Meanwhile, the US Department of Defense is grappling with budget shortfalls, partly due to ongoing operations in Iran and increased domestic deployments. The Pentagon requires an additional $67.1 billion for its 2026 budget, with $37.5 billion specifically needed by September due to the conflict in Iran. Production costs for the F-35 fighter jet have also risen by nearly 11% across its variants, with the F-35A's takeoff and landing cost increasing from $82.5 million to $92 million over two years.

Singapore, a strategically located nation, is acquiring 20 F-35 fighter jets to replace its F-16 fleet. Twelve F-35B variants will be stationed at Ebbing Air Force Base in Arkansas for training, with the first delivery expected in fiscal year 2026. The remaining eight F-35s will be delivered to Singapore's Tengah Air Base starting in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2029. Singapore also utilizes Israeli technology, such as Elbit's Hermes 900 drone.

In the drone sector, Elbit's subsidiary, Fuse, has launched a series of One2Many drone systems designed for swarm attacks, challenging air defense systems. These systems, including the Thor, IntraX, and MaganX, can be deployed by soldiers for autonomous reconnaissance, surveillance, electronic warfare, and logistical missions.
