Paramedic Saves 17-Year-Old From Life-Threatening Allergic Reaction in Uman

Translated & summarized from Kikar HaShabbat by baba
The story · English

A 17-year-old boy's life was saved by a United Hatzalah paramedic after he suffered a severe allergic reaction near the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov in Uman, Ukraine. The incident occurred during the annual pilgrimage of Breslov Hasidim ahead of Rosh Hashanah, a time when tens of thousands of followers and visitors flock to the city.

Paramedic David Ordman of United Hatzalah quickly administered an adrenaline injection to the teenager, stabilizing his condition. Ordman stated, "The young man developed an allergic reaction that endangered his life. I injected him with an ampule of adrenaline and his condition stabilized." The youth was then transported to a United Hatzalah clinic in Uman for further medical treatment. Severe allergic reactions can lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition characterized by a sharp drop in blood pressure, breathing difficulties, and potentially death.

This incident is one of several medical cases handled by United Hatzalah in Uman recently. Earlier in the week, United Hatzalah paramedics delivered a healthy baby near the tomb. Additionally, Israeli police officers are present in Uman as part of a special deployment to assist Israeli citizens. In a separate event, a 7-year-old boy who had lost his parents was found and reunited with his family thanks to the efforts of Israeli police.

The city of Uman is currently filled with tens of thousands of Jews from around the world who have traveled to be near the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov for Rosh Hashanah. Amidst the crowds, the "Heichal HaTorah" study hall, operated by the "Uman Sheli" organization, has become a popular center for thousands of learners studying the teachings of Rabbi Nachman.
