Israeli Goalkeeper Nikita Haikin Injured in Champions League Match

Israeli goalkeeper Nikita Haikin sustained an injury during his team Bodo/Glimt's Champions League match against Bayern Munich on September 26th. Haikin, who was making his season debut in the tournament, had a strong first half, keeping a clean sheet despite facing seven shots from Bayern. He made a remarkable save in the 44th minute, stopping a shot that had already crossed the goal line. Despite continuing to play through pain, including blocking a long ball and making a long pass, Haikin was substituted at halftime due to the injury.

His absence proved costly, as Bayern scored their first goal in the 47th minute and a second in the 61st minute, ultimately winning the match 2-0. Sky Germany praised Haikin's performance, noting his disciplined tactical work and quick reactions to threats. They described his final save as unconventional and fortunate.

Haikin, 31, was born in Netanya to Russian immigrant parents. He returned to Russia at age two but later came back to Israel, playing for Bnei Yehuda and Hapoel Kfar Saba between 2016 and 2018. After a period of moving between clubs, he found a stable position with Bodo/Glimt in 2019. He has become the team's primary goalkeeper and was a key player in their surprising elimination of Inter Milan from the Champions League playoffs last season. Haikin is currently the only Israeli player competing in the Champions League this season.
