Police Conclude Investigation into Sophisticated Facebook Marketplace Scams

Israeli police have concluded their investigation into a sophisticated fraud scheme operated on Facebook Marketplace, with the Central District Prosecutor's Office filing charges against a 31-year-old Netanya resident. The suspect, Margo Jessie Sitbon, faces at least 16 counts of fraud, document forgery, theft, and aggravated misappropriation of property.

According to the indictment, Sitbon targeted sellers of expensive items on the platform. She allegedly convinced them that payments had been successfully processed by providing fake digital receipts. In some instances, she used stolen checks, accompanied by deliberately false information.

During the investigation, Israeli police gathered testimony from dozens of victims. The case gained significant public attention after a Channel 12 news crew intervened. When journalists attempted to obtain a comment from Sitbon, her associates reportedly attacked them. Police arrived at the scene and detained the suspect. A court has since extended Sitbon's pre-trial detention three times as the legal proceedings continue.

This case follows previous warnings from Israeli police about emerging scams, including fraudulent messages disguised as official traffic violation notices that urge recipients to click a link and make payments.
