Elderly Targeted in Sophisticated Scam, Over $800,000 Stolen

Israeli police have arrested five suspects in connection with a sophisticated fraud ring that targeted elderly individuals across the country, allegedly stealing over 3 million shekels (approximately $810,000 USD). The suspects, aged in their 20s and 30s and residing in Haifa and Tamra, were apprehended following an extensive undercover investigation.

The group is accused of operating a complex digital scam, sending victims messages claiming they owed money and including a fake link that appeared to be from an official entity. When unsuspecting victims clicked the fraudulent link, the suspects allegedly gained access to their bank accounts and siphoned funds without their knowledge.

This phishing scheme exploited the trust elderly individuals place in official institutions. Investigators have identified over 30 victims so far, with the total amount stolen estimated to exceed 3 million shekels. Police seized evidence linking the suspects to the alleged crimes during searches of their homes.

Four of the suspects had their detention extended until September 7, 2026, while the fifth suspect's detention was extended until September 3, 2026, by the court. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to identify additional potential victims. Similar cases of technology-based fraud targeting seniors have been reported in Israel in recent months.
