Hassidic Courts Prepare Lavishly for High Holidays Amidst Expansion and Innovation
Hassidic communities across Israel and the United States are making extensive preparations for the upcoming High Holidays, marked by significant expansions, technological advancements, and unique prayer arrangements. In the Gur community, preparations include luxury viewing galleries for major donors to a new mikvah project, with prime spots costing up to $300,000 annually. Thousands of attendees are expected for holiday meals, with subsidized meals offered to students and a record number of registrations this year.
The Belz community faced concern when their Rebbe was hospitalized due to an infection, but he has since been released. For Rosh Hashanah, thousands of young students will pray in a separate minyan to accommodate the large crowds, while the Rebbe will lead morning prayers with them and afternoon prayers in the main sanctuary.
The Vizhnitz community in Bnei Brak has expanded its main prayer hall and renovated a large hall for holiday meals. Due to the Rebbe's health, his prayer platform has been elevated for better visibility, creating a bidding war for adjacent spots, with one spot selling for $170,000.
In Sanz, modular prayer platforms and relocated staircases are being used to maximize seating in the main prayer hall. New amenities like a large, air-conditioned tent for refreshments and an expanded restroom facility have also been added.
The Slonim community will see a historic change as the Rebbe, nearing 90, will lead a separate Musaf prayer service on the first day of Rosh Hashanah for approximately 1,000 students in a large tent, a move to alleviate overcrowding in the main sanctuary. The main sanctuary will host the elder congregants and the Rebbe's sons.
Karlin-Stolin in Givat Ze'ev is implementing a digital auction system for Torah honors, allowing for anonymous or group bids and real-time notifications for higher offers.
In Ponevezh, a massive expansion of the main prayer hall, "Ohel Kedoshim," is underway to accommodate nearly 3,000 students praying together, a necessity due to a record influx of new students. This expansion, involving temporary structures and the removal of doors, aims to keep all students praying in a single minyan led by the Rosh Yeshiva.
Modzitz has unveiled a new, exceptionally large and ornate Holy Ark in their main prayer hall in Bnei Brak, a significant addition following recent renovations.
In Uman, Ukraine, Breslov Hasidim are introducing a "shtibel"-style prayer system with frequent, staggered minyanim in the main Sephardic prayer hall to manage the massive crowds expected at Rabbi Nachman of Breslov's tomb. A proposal to build a coffee room within the cemetery grounds was rejected by rabbinical authorities.
