Israel's Defense Exports Surge to Record $19.2 Billion Fueled by Advanced Tech

Israel's defense export industry has experienced a dramatic surge, reaching a record $19.2 billion in 2025, a figure that has doubled in five years and quadrupled in a decade. This boom is attributed to the proven operational effectiveness of Israeli military systems, particularly those that have demonstrated their capabilities in recent conflicts and against Iran. The demand for these "hot" technologies, which have proven themselves in real-time combat, has propelled Israel to become a sought-after technological and defense superpower.

Three major Israeli defense companies, Rafael, Elbit, and Israel Aerospace Industries, dominate the export market, securing nearly all foreign revenue, while smaller companies and startups lag behind. Israeli technology is now integrated into numerous global military platforms, including American Apache helicopters firing Spike missiles, European Leopard tanks equipped with the Iron Fist active protection system, and Germany's reliance on the Arrow 3 missile defense system. Israeli drones, such as the Heron and Hermes families, are also deployed in conflicts worldwide.

Key technologies driving this success include the Spike missile family, developed after the Yom Kippur War to counter enemy armor, which has become a global standard used by 48 countries, including 22 NATO members. The Iron Fist active protection system, designed to neutralize incoming anti-tank missiles and rockets, has been integrated into over 2,000 armored platforms globally and has been selected for American Abrams and European Leopard tanks. The Arrow 3 system, initially developed under the US "Star Wars" initiative, is now a critical component of Israel's missile defense and has been purchased by Germany, demonstrating its effectiveness in intercepting ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere.

Furthermore, Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly the Heron and Hermes series, have been instrumental in transforming the role of drones from niche tools to essential battlefield components. While facing increasing competition from countries like Turkey and China, these advanced drones offer capabilities far beyond smaller, ground-level drones. The Iron Dome's radar system, the ELM-2084, originally developed for artillery units, has also become a significant export success, with over 250 units sold globally, demonstrating the continuous improvement and adaptability of Israeli defense technology.
