Israel's Air Defense Systems Secure Over $15 Billion in European Contracts

Israeli air defense systems have secured over $15 billion in contracts from European nations in less than five years, a significant surge driven by the war in Ukraine and Europe's urgent need to bolster aerial protection. The recent "Achilles Shield" agreement, valued at approximately $3.5 billion, further solidifies Israel's position as a key supplier of advanced defense technology to the continent.

European countries, which had reduced military spending after the Cold War, are now re-evaluating their security needs in light of threats from ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, highlighted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Germany has been a major player, purchasing the Arrow 3 system for about $3.6 billion in 2023, Israel's largest-ever military export deal, with an additional $3.1 billion extension approved for late 2025. The Arrow 3 is set to be a cornerstone of Europe's "Sky Shield" initiative.

Other European nations have also made substantial purchases. Romania ordered SPYDER short- and medium-range systems for around $2.3 billion. The Czech Republic and Slovakia jointly acquired SPYDER and Barak MX systems for over $1.2 billion. Finland opted for the David's Sling system for approximately $345 million, and Cyprus acquired Barak MX batteries for hundreds of millions of euros.

Israeli defense firms are benefiting from relatively short delivery times and proven operational effectiveness, particularly highlighted by successful interceptions of Iranian missiles and drones by Arrow, David's Sling, and Barak systems. This influx of orders is a significant boost to Israel's economy, with companies like Israel Aerospace Industries, Rafael, and Elbit Systems expanding their workforce and production capabilities. The revenue generated will also fund the development of new defensive layers, including laser systems and future interceptors, with Germany potentially eyeing the Arrow 4 system.
