Teacher Shot Near School in Rahat; Classes Delayed
A teacher, Arwa Nasser, was shot and wounded in the legs on Thursday morning near the Al-Bader school in Rahat, where he teaches. Nasser, a resident of Dir Hana, was sitting in his vehicle in a parking lot adjacent to the school around 7:40 AM when masked assailants approached and fired at him. He sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Soroka Hospital.
Police forces responded to the scene and have launched an investigation into the incident. The Rahat Local Council and its education department issued a strong condemnation of the shooting, emphasizing that educational institutions and their surroundings must be safe spaces. They wished Nasser a full recovery and called for the rejection of violence in all its forms.
In response to the shooting, the Teachers Union announced that classes at the Al-Bader school would commence late on Sunday, September 13, at 10:00 AM. A union representative is scheduled to visit the school to hold informational sessions with the teaching staff. Michael Pinto, deputy secretary-general of the Teachers Union, described the shooting as a severe and extreme event, stating that an educator being shot near a school crosses all boundaries and that the education system should not operate amidst lawlessness. He urged authorities and law enforcement to act decisively to ensure the safety of educators and students.
Dr. Eliezer Vinograd, another representative from the Teachers Union, also condemned the attack, highlighting its severity and the potential exposure of children to violence.
