New Neighborhood with 16,000 Homes Approved Near Jerusalem

The district committee has approved for deposit a plan to establish a new, large neighborhood in the city of Beit Shemesh, located near Jerusalem. The plan, dubbed "Central Quarter," will span 1,000 dunams and is slated to include approximately 16,000 housing units.

In addition to residential buildings, the new quarter will feature a significant employment complex, commercial areas, educational and public institutions, green spaces, and a public transportation network. The buildings in the new development are planned to reach up to nine stories high, above the main entrance level.

The committee stipulated that the construction of residential complexes will proceed concurrently with the development of the road network, public buildings, and open spaces. Furthermore, a portion of the employment complex is to be advanced alongside the first residential complex. The occupancy of residential units will be contingent upon the completion of public buildings, roads, and necessary development work in each complex.

Shimon Goldberg, chairman of the local committee, welcomed the decision, emphasizing that the phased and integrated development approach, ensuring roads, public institutions, and employment facilities are developed alongside housing, is crucial. He stated this will enable the creation of a quality quarter that genuinely meets residents' needs and will connect different parts of Beit Shemesh, contributing to the city's preparation for a population of over half a million people.
