Israel Defense Export Body Holds Seminar for Japanese Firms

Israel's Ministry of Defense's Directorate of Defense Export Controls (SIBAT) recently hosted a specialized seminar for Israeli defense companies and representatives from Japanese trade and industrial enterprises. The event, reported by "Globes," was prompted by a significant increase in interest from Japanese corporations and government officials in Israeli defense products.

Japan has been rapidly expanding its defense budget and strengthening its military capabilities, influenced by the war in Ukraine and rising threats from China and North Korea. Both the Japanese Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Trade, which oversee defense procurement, are keen on acquiring advanced technologies and potentially transferring production lines and know-how to Japan.

Given the advanced nature of Japan's own industrial sector, the SIBAT seminar focused on practical aspects of introducing Israeli defense technologies into the Japanese market, including navigating cultural differences in business practices. A new mentorship program was also presented, designed to guide Israeli defense companies in the Japanese market over approximately three months.

This program, to be run with a partner organization, will offer personalized support from Japanese experts and assist companies in developing market entry strategies. Participants will conclude with presentations and in-person business meetings in Japan. According to "Globes," Japanese interest spans a wide range of Israeli defense capabilities, including air defense, drone defense, drone technology, lasers, robotics, missile systems, artillery, unmanned naval systems, and passive protection solutions, noting a lack of hardened facilities in Japan.
