Renowned Educator Rabbi Yisrael Braunstein, Who Taught Thousands, Dies at 75

Kikar HaShabbatReligious
Translated & summarized from Kikar HaShabbat by baba
The story · English

Rabbi Yisrael Braunstein, a highly respected educator who taught thousands of students, passed away this week at the age of 75 after a difficult illness. He was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1950, on the first day of the Selichot penitential prayers, and died during the same period this year, fulfilling the saying that the righteous have their years filled day by day. Rabbi Braunstein immigrated to Israel as a youth and dedicated his life to Torah education.

He studied in prominent yeshivas before marrying Yael, of the Bryne family, and settling in Bnei Brak. For decades, he served as a devoted educator at several Talmud Torah schools, including 'Torah Temima,' 'Lev Chaim,' 'Shtilei Zaytim,' and 'Pri Chadash,' instilling in his young students reverence, love for Torah, and good character traits. His reputation as a leading educator preceded him, with his work yielding generations of students.

In 1996, he moved to Jerusalem and began teaching at the 'HaMesila' Talmud Torah in the Ramot neighborhood, where he taught for 17 years. Colleagues and former students remember him as a figure of immense Torah scholarship, innocence, and piety, deeply connected to the sanctity of Shabbat. He was known for his heartfelt prayers at the 'Tefillah LeMoshe' synagogue.

Despite facing a severe illness in recent years, Rabbi Braunstein endured his suffering with faith and acceptance. His passing occurred on Tuesday, September 9th. Hundreds of students attended his funeral, held at the Sanhedria cemetery in Jerusalem, to pay their final respects to their beloved teacher. The family is observing Shiva, the traditional mourning period, at his home in Jerusalem, with a public gathering scheduled for Thursday evening.
