Israeli Students Propose Repurposing Solar Panels as Building Material
As solar energy adoption surges globally, a significant challenge emerges: managing the millions of tons of solar panels that will reach their end-of-life in the coming decades. Standard solar panels are designed to last 25 to 30 years, but are often replaced sooner due to upgrades to more efficient and cost-effective systems. This practice, likened to replacing an iPhone annually, results in panels still capable of producing up to 80% of their original capacity being discarded.
While some panels are reused or sent for specialized recycling in countries with established infrastructure, many, including in Israel, still end up in landfills. The environmental impact of solar panels must be considered across their entire lifecycle, from raw material extraction to disposal. Although they produce clean energy for decades, their manufacturing process involves energy, water, and pollutant emissions.
To address the growing waste problem, students at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev have developed a project exploring the reuse of old solar panels as a sustainable building material. Inspired by research from India, the project proposes repurposing panels, which are primarily composed of glass and aluminum, into structural elements for lightweight construction. These could be used for agricultural buildings, storage facilities, or even as less powerful solar panels for off-grid agricultural structures.
Calculations suggest this approach could reduce building energy consumption by approximately 30%, cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 33%, and lower construction costs by roughly 38%. This initiative aligns with circular economy principles, extending the lifespan of panels, reducing future waste, and providing a low-cost, sustainable building material.
Experts emphasize the need for policy changes, noting that Israel currently lacks dedicated standards for solar panel recycling, unlike many European nations with established recycling facilities and end-of-life management regulations. Without proactive measures, Israel risks facing a new waste crisis as vast quantities of solar panels reach their disposal date.
