Common Household Chemicals Linked to Health Concerns in New Research
Research into quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), widely used in disinfectants and cleaning products, has raised concerns about potential health risks, particularly regarding reproductive issues and developmental problems. Initially identified in studies involving mice, these chemicals, found in products for hands, surfaces, laundry, and personal care, have been detected in human blood, breast milk, urine, and feces. Early studies suggest QACs may interfere with myelin production, essential for nerve function, and impact cellular energy production.
However, experts caution against alarm, emphasizing that the presence of these chemicals in the body does not automatically equate to harm. Dr. Ofir Levon, head of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at Carmel Medical Center, notes that the vast group of QACs includes hundreds of substances, and concerns are often focused on specific, limited-use disinfectants rather than general cleaning agents. He stresses that human studies are still limited, and the link between QAC exposure and specific diseases remains unclear. Animal studies, he adds, often use high doses or exposure levels not comparable to typical household use.
Concerns about reproductive health emerged from studies where mice exposed to QACs showed reduced fertility, pregnancy complications, and, in males, lower sperm counts and motility. Despite these findings, Dr. Levon states there is no conclusive human evidence linking regular household use of QACs to infertility, miscarriages, or birth defects. He characterizes claims of such links as speculation rather than proven conclusions.
The more established risks associated with QACs involve direct contact, potentially causing skin, eye, and respiratory irritation. Individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma are advised to minimize exposure to disinfectant sprays, ensure good ventilation, and opt for wiping surfaces over spraying. While QACs are not highly volatile, inhalation exposure can occur through aerosols, and proper ventilation is key. Skin contact is also a concern, especially with prolonged exposure to concentrated forms without gloves.
Ingestion is a less common exposure route for adults but can be significant for young children. Experts recommend minimizing unnecessary disinfection, keeping cleaning products out of reach of children, and washing surfaces after disinfection, especially those in contact with food. During the COVID-19 pandemic, household dust and human blood levels of QACs saw significant increases, with nearly half of certain cleaning products in the US containing them. Nevertheless, regulatory bodies have not issued warnings against regular household use, and soap and water are often sufficient for cleaning. Dr. Levon advises using disinfectants only when truly necessary, following manufacturer instructions, and prioritizing simpler cleaning methods when adequate.
