Common Household Disinfectants Linked to Severe Fertility Harm in New Study
A recent extensive study published in the journal Reproductive Toxicology reveals that common disinfectants from the quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) family, widely used in household cleaning products, cosmetics, and even eye drops, significantly disrupt hormonal balance and impair fertility in both males and females. These chemicals, found in everyday environments, were previously known mainly for causing skin irritation and respiratory issues, but this new research highlights their deeper reproductive toxicity.
Conducted on mice, the study found that exposure to QACs leads to a sharp decline in reproductive hormones essential for fertility. Pregnant females showed notably reduced estrogen and progesterone levels, increasing risks of pregnancy complications and miscarriages. In males, the chemicals did not kill sperm cells immediately but damaged sperm production over time, resulting in poor fertilization capacity. The disinfectants also harmed critical testicular cells responsible for nurturing sperm and compromised the natural protective barrier against toxins.
Alarmingly, even passive exposure, mice living in rooms regularly cleaned with QAC-containing products without direct contact, caused negative hormonal changes. Although the findings are based on animal models, scientists warn these results should raise serious concerns given the global rise in infertility rates and the increased use of disinfectants since the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding the impact of everyday chemical exposure on human reproductive health is now more urgent than ever.
