Democrat John Fetterman Appears at Republican Convention, Praises GOP Colleague

He praised McCormick as "a senator who gets things done" and "a great friend."

The appearance is significant because Fetterman is a sitting Democratic senator and not a Republican or someone considering switching parties. He appeared at the convention of the opposing party, using some language typically employed by Republicans against the left. Fetterman's political trajectory has been unconventional. Known for his distinctive appearance and background as a former mayor of a small industrial town, he was elected to the Senate in 2022. However, his political shift became more pronounced after October 7th, when he unequivocally supported Israel's war against Hamas, clashing with progressive elements within the Democratic party.

His support for Israel has become a notable point of division. While he missed the 2024 Democratic National Convention, citing family time, his alignment with some Republican positions has widened the gap with his party. He has supported some of Trump's nominees, voted with Republicans on government shutdowns, and opposed efforts to end the war in Iran. Following Trump's 2024 election victory, Fetterman was the first Democratic senator to meet with the president-elect.

Despite these actions, Fetterman maintains he is not becoming a Republican, stating he will "have a conversation with anyone who is being reasonable." He has drawn a line, however, at the Democratic party becoming "anti-Israel." Polling data indicates a significant shift in his standing, with a sharp decline in positive views among registered Democrats in Pennsylvania and a surge in positive views among Republicans. His relationship with McCormick has also deepened, including joint appearances and a shared political fundraising committee.
