Senator John Fetterman Threatens to Leave Democratic Party Over Anti-Israel Shift

Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has issued a stark warning that he will leave the Democratic Party if it officially adopts an anti-Israel stance. Speaking to CNN on Thursday, Fetterman criticized the progressive left within his party for promoting positions against Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza and tensions with Iran. He described this potential policy shift as his "red line," emphasizing that while a recent House vote by over 100 Democrats to block military aid to Israel was merely symbolic, an official party platform endorsing such views would compel him to depart.

Fetterman also expressed support for military actions against Hamas and Hezbollah, calling them legitimate targets. He lamented the party's changing attitude, noting that Democrats were once proud to stand with Israel but now face internal divisions. The senator further criticized liberal Senate candidates for being intensely anti-Israel or pro-Palestinian, highlighting the growing ideological rift within the party.

Despite his firm pro-Israel stance, Fetterman faces increasing challenges within his own ranks. A recent poll indicated that most Democratic voters in Pennsylvania want him to leave the party. Fetterman responded with surprise, pointing out his strong Democratic voting record and bipartisan support, but he acknowledged that his open support for Israel might be contributing to his waning popularity among Democrats. He has not yet confirmed whether he will seek re-election in 2028 or run as a Democrat in the primaries.
