Beersheba School Delays Start After Student Assaults Teacher

Classes at Makif Alef School in Beersheba, Israel, were delayed until 10:00 AM on Thursday following a violent incident where a seventh-grade student physically assaulted his homeroom teacher during the first lesson. The student reportedly punched the teacher and used severe profanity in front of other students. The teacher sustained injuries and required medical attention.

The Teachers Union announced the delayed start to raise awareness about the escalating violence against educators. The union stated that the incident left the teacher, students, and staff deeply shaken.

Dr. Eliezer Vinograd, acting secretary-general of the Teachers Union and head of its Beersheba branch, was scheduled to visit the school to hold a briefing with the educational staff. Michael Pinto, head of the union's professional union department, condemned the attack, calling it a severe failure that cannot be ignored. He emphasized that educators cannot be held responsible for student discipline and safety while being left vulnerable to physical and verbal abuse.

Pinto stressed that the Ministry of Education and school administrations must provide full support to teachers and implement deterrent measures. He asserted that the Teachers Union will not allow violence against educators to become an accepted reality. Dr. Vinograd reiterated that the assault crossed a red line, stating it is unacceptable for a teacher to end their workday injured after coming to educate students and provide a safe environment. He vowed that the union would stand by the teacher and school staff, working resolutely to ensure their safety and dignity, and would not tolerate violence, threats, or harm to educational personnel.
