Yael Shelbia Discusses Evolving Fashion Industry's Shabbat Observance

Israeli model Yael Shelbia shared her experiences regarding the fashion industry's evolving approach to Shabbat observance. She explained that in the past, there were frequent conflicts between her career demands, particularly international work, and her commitment to keeping Shabbat. However, Shelbia now feels the industry is more accommodating of her choices.

In an interview with Pnai Plus, Shelbia revealed that her initial career aspirations were different, stating, "I wanted to be an educator." She also clarified her current relationship with religion, distinguishing it from strict religious observance. "It's less about religion, it's more about God. I keep Shabbat, I keep tradition. My lifestyle doesn't feel religious, and I don't act religious, but I am in full communication with God every day and every moment of my life. I believe very much," she stated.

Shelbia recalled that the clashes between her faith and work were more pronounced previously, especially with jobs abroad. "Today, in Israel, I feel there is a more accepting and religious atmosphere. Also in the industry, in the field. It used to be strange that there was a religious model, someone who kept Shabbat while working in the field, and today I see it everywhere," she observed.

She also mentioned her partner, Brandon Korff, is very supportive of her observance. "He's very connected to Judaism. His career and his life are very much, you know, flying all day and traveling the world and also being in a very secular and non-Jewish environment, and we really enjoy our quiet and our Sabbaths, Torah lessons, there are many things," she said.
