Israel Reintroduces Vintage License Plates for Classic Cars

Israel's Ministry of Transportation is bringing back five-digit license plates for vintage cars manufactured up to 1960, allowing owners to apply for these historical plates from a reserved pool. This initiative follows a successful pilot program initiated last year at the request of "Club 5," Israel's club for car collectors and enthusiasts.

During the pilot, approximately 120 collectible vehicles were issued the older-style plates. Due to the program's success and strong demand from the collector community, the Ministry of Transportation has decided to make this option a permanent arrangement for all eligible vintage car owners.

The decision was developed in collaboration with representatives from the collector community, aiming to preserve the historical appearance and character of these classic vehicles. Transportation Minister Miri Regev stated that vintage cars are an integral part of Israel's automotive history, and collectors preserve not only unique vehicles with fascinating stories but an entire heritage. She added that the ministry is responding to the community's request to allow these older vehicles to have their appropriate historical license plates, calling it a small tribute to a community that contributes significantly to the public.
