Israel's Transportation Ministry Offers Historic License Plates for Vintage Cars
The Israeli Ministry of Transportation announced Wednesday that it will now permanently allow owners of collectible vehicles manufactured up to 1960 to apply for a historic five-digit license plate. This decision follows a successful pilot program initiated by the "Club 5" collectors' club, which saw approximately 120 vintage cars receive such plates.
The program's success and the strong demand from the collector community led to the development of a technological infrastructure to expand the service. The ministry stated that the initiative was developed in cooperation with representatives of the car collector community, aiming to preserve the historical character of these older vehicles.
Owners of collectible cars made before 1960 can now request a change to their license plate number, subject to the availability of the historical numbers in the ministry's database. Transportation Minister Miri Regev commented, "Collectible cars are part of Israel's motor history. We decided to respond to the collectors' community's request and allow the old vehicles to also return to their appropriate historical license plate."
