US Airlines Return to Israel, Driving Competition and Lower Fares

Two major American airlines, Delta and United Airlines, have resumed flights to Israel this week, landing at Ben Gurion Airport. Israir is set to join them next week, having received all necessary approvals for its New York route. These additions complement existing services from El Al and Arkia to the United States, significantly increasing flight options.

Despite the expanded capacity, airfares have not yet seen a substantial drop. Israir, for instance, is charging around $900 one-way during the holiday season, with prices rising further around Yom Kippur. Similar pricing is observed with other carriers, indicating that the increased supply has not yet met the high demand.

Looking ahead, there are signs of potential price reductions. A review by the travel company Gulliver suggests that flights to New York for under $1,000 may become available in early 2027. The period between February and May 2027 is highlighted as particularly promising for finding attractive fares. While January and February might offer lower prices due to colder weather, March to May presents more pleasant conditions for travel, with some dates still showing round-trip flights below the $1,000 threshold.

For example, Delta flights in mid-January and early February are priced at $878, and round-trip tickets with Delta and El Al in mid-February to early March are available for $773. Tamar Gershon, CEO of Gulliver, stated that the return of American carriers alongside Israeli airlines is a significant development, fostering competition and improving passenger options. She advises booking upcoming trips to New York and the US now to capitalize on potentially lower prices, especially for flexible travelers.
